Reiki (Universal Life Force Energy) is a form of energy work a.k.a. hands-on healing, which can activate the body's own healing powers as well as facilitate inner peace, deep relaxation and spiritual awakening. Reiki is easy to learn, safe and natural and can be used in combination with allopathic medicine or other alternative complementary medicine.

The Japanese word "REI" (pronounced "ray") means universal, spiritual. The word "KI" (pronounced "key") means life force energy, just like the Chinese word "Chi." This energy flows through all living things and is derived from Source/Spirit (some would even say God).

Reiki is a blending of intuitive sensation in the healer, intention and focused direction of healing energy from Source toward the recipient. Reiki has been proven beneficial to everyone from newborns to the elderly, and even for animals and plants.

Reiki was (re)discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk who dedicated decades of his life to finding the methods of healing used by Buddha and Jesus. In a powerful journey to Mount Kuryama, a mountain considered very sacred in Japan, he received the Reiki symbols and wisdom on how to use them, and spent the rest of his life developing and teaching the Reiki System of Natural Healing.

Today, Reiki has been credited with millions of healings, both physical and emotional, ranging from supporting the body to heal itself more quickly, increasing vital strength and energy, to building the immune system and even miracles of serious illnesses and conditions such as cancer, heart disease and more.

Reiki is now practiced in over 70 hospitals in the U.S. alone as it has been found to reduce infection rates, speed recovery time and enhance healing of nearly any condition. One thing many practitioners enjoy the most about providing Reiki is that unlike many other healing methods, the practitioner is also healed during the Reiki healing, rather than their energy being drained.

Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, went to Mt. Kurama, a holy mountain, in Japan in March 1922. Some sources say his original intention was to receive personal guidance about his life, while others report that he was seeking to discover how enlightened beings like Jesus could heal physical illness instantly and miraculously. At the end of his meditation retreat, he experienced a point of light energy coming toward him. "This light was so great it caused him to be enlightened." Upon receipt of this energy, he went back to town to embark on a new dedication to heal people with this discovered modality. And, he generated a concretely understandable code of ethics which he passed on as he trained others in the practice. Dr. Usui had an extensive background in religion, philosophy, metaphysics and psychic practices and developed a complete healing system along with healing symbols, meditation methods and a formalized method of teaching the Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui Reiki Healing Method).

One of Usui's students, a retired Japanese naval officer named Chujiro Hayashi, became Usui's successor 22 years after he was trained in Reiki at age 25. Upon the passing of Dr. Usui, upon the request of Usui sensei, Dr. Hayashi opened his own healing school and clinic in Tokyo. Dr. Hayashi, who was also a medical doctor, expanded upon the Reiki system and taught Reiki to many students including, in 1935, a woman from Hawaii named Hawayo Takata, the first woman to become a Reiki Master.

Takata is responsible for bringing this work to the United States and keeping Reiki alive even during the anti-Japanese attitudes during WWII. After her passing in 1980, her Granddaughter, Phyllis Furomoto has continued this effort, including the establishment of the Reiki Alliance in 1983 for the purpose of propagating the values of Reiki and providing a viable business forum in the U.S.A.

Reiki healing is the gentlest of healing practices. Even though there is a association with "the laying on of hands," most Reiki is done without touch. On one end of the spectrum, Reiki is amazingly relaxing and pleasurable and can bring you into a deep trance state. So, given this Reiki is a huge stress buster! Often you will feel heat sensations from the hands. With ongoing use, Reiki can assist with the healing of illness and damage to the body.

Reiki can also have an impact on psychological and social states as well and can only be used in a positive fashion. Healing energy cannot be manipulated to do harm.

Reiki can be received from a distance as well. A person does not have to be present with the practitioner. When I do distance Reiki sessions, I schedule a time just as if I were meeting the client in person.
